Club leadership

Officers & Committee Positions

The Fort Worth Gem & Mineral Club is operated entirely by volunteers. Club officers and committee leaders help organize meetings, field trips, education programs, outreach efforts, publications, and our annual show.

Interested members are always welcome to learn more about serving and supporting club activities.

Executive Officers

Volunteer leaders who guide meetings, planning, and club direction.

Jon Shoemaker, Club President

Jon Shoemaker

Club President

Jon joined the club in 2023. He has been married for 21 years. He grew up in the Pacific Northwest and Western Canada and has lived in the Metroplex on and off for more than 20 years. He currently works in the fashion, apparel, and footwear business in analytics, supply chain management, logistics, and distribution.

Club Interests

Jon loves collecting rocks. To him, every rock, gem, and mineral is like a fingerprint — unique in its own way. He enjoys cutting into rocks to see what they look like inside and finds it fascinating when their beauty is more than simply “a rock.”

He has also started moving into jewelry making as a personal challenge, especially because artistic expression has not traditionally been one of his strongest areas. He is also interested in staking a claim and doing small-scale mining and prospecting, whether on private or public land.

George Wood, Club Secretary

George Wood

Club Secretary

George Wood took over as Secretary at the end of 2024.

Glenda Bradley

Club Treasurer

Glenda Bradley joined the club in late 2015 and became Treasurer at the beginning of 2021 after retiring from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Club Interests

Glenda has always had an interest in pretty rocks and enjoys learning what can be done with them through different classes at the club and from knowledgeable club members. She also serves as Show Chair for the club’s annual gem and mineral show held each May.

Outside the club, Glenda enjoys wood carving and showing her Quarter Horse and Miniature Horses. Unfortunately, the horses keep her from going on overnight field trips with the club — something she is often reminded about after each trip when she hears how much fun they were.

Treasurer History

From 2018–2020, Brent Cowels served as Treasurer. Schuyler Bullock, a longtime FWGMC member, served as Treasurer from 2016–2018 after previously leading field trips. He graciously stepped up to replace Fran Loyd, who now serves as Sunshine Chairperson.

Before that, Elsie Kennedy served as Treasurer for more than a decade before stepping down in 2009. She passed away in 2012 and is dearly missed. The club is grateful to continue having dedicated members willing to serve and keep things going.

Sterling Synder, 1st VP of Education

Sterling Synder

1st VP of Education

Sterling joined the club in 2023 and has enjoyed learning more about rocks from the experienced members in the club.

He has a strong interest in making things from wood, metal, leather, and glass, and joined the club to take as many classes as he could. Now that he has been elected to the education role, he wants to make sure the classes that got him hooked are available and easy to access for current and future members.

Education Note

If you have any interest in learning a new skill, please reach out and he will help find a teacher for you.

Outside the Club

When not at the club, Sterling runs a machining and prototyping business and takes care of his two cats. He loves talking about how things are made, so come up and talk shop at the next meeting.

Gina Koenig, 2nd VP of Field Trips

Gina Koenig

2nd VP of Field Trips

Gina joined the club in the heart of COVID in early summer 2021. She has a passion for travel and the outdoors and is excited to help plan and organize club field trips.

Gina loves making jewelry and is excited to apply her newly learned cabbing and silversmithing skills in her craft.

Field Trip Note

Gina is making new connections and partnering with other rock, gem, and mineral clubs to find great opportunities for FWGMC members.

Since she is new to planning these trips, members with ideas or suggestions are encouraged to contact her.

Program Goals

As Programs Officer, Jon wants to provide members with a wide variety of interesting topics and speakers. He especially enjoys one-off topics that may not come up in regular discussions, as well as topics members are passionate about. He encourages members to send suggestions for future programs.

Fran Loyd, Sunshine Chairperson

Fran Loyd

Sunshine Chairperson

Fran Loyd serves as the club’s Sunshine Chairperson. In this role, she helps keep the club informed about important news in members’ lives, including celebrations, illnesses, losses, and other life changes.

Sunshine Role

Whether the club needs to celebrate good news, send a get-well card, offer support, or simply make sure members feel remembered, Fran helps the club respond with care.

Janice Craddock Bowen, Dealer Chairperson

Janice Craddock Bowen

Dealer Chairperson

Janice Craddock Bowen joined the club in January 2012. Before joining FWGMC, she had been a member of other area clubs for a couple of years. She was energetic from the start, quickly helping get the lapidary shop in shape and starting cabbing classes.

Club Service

Janice has worn many hats in the club, including Newsletter Editor from 2012–2018, Show Chairperson from 2018–2019, Vendor Chair from 2018–2026, President from 2021–2024 and 2026, and VP of Education from 2024–2025.

She continues to stay involved by chairing various committees. She welcomes new members and encourages them to get involved. Whether someone is a longtime member or brand new, Janice helps make them feel at home and ready to jump into club activities.

Outside the Club

Formerly the Director of Information Technology at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Janice is enjoying retirement and travel. With her background in Girl Scouts, she is always prepared for the latest adventure the club presents.

Now that her two children are grown, she has more time to pursue her lapidary interests, mainly related to agates and cabbing. She loves the bling but has also learned to appreciate a good fossil when she sees one.

Joyce Griffiths, Newsletter Editor

Joyce Griffiths

Newsletter Editor

Join us in welcoming Joyce Griffiths as the new Newsletter Editor in 2026. Joyce has been a member since 2015.

Outside the Club

Joyce and her husband, Dan, care for a couple of retired horses in Mineral Wells. She loves taking jewelry-making classes. When she is not wrangling four-legged friends, she is metalsmithing — crafting shiny metal beads and fabulous copper jewelry.

David Nolen, Shop Foreman

David Nolen

Shop Foreman

David Nolen joined the club in 2014 when his wife talked him into it — and it turned out to be a good thing. Since then, he has continued adding to his collection of petrified wood.

The first field trip the club took after he joined was to collect petrified wood, and he has been hooked ever since. His favorite part of the shop is the slab saws. He maintains them and cuts rocks for members who have rocks to cut.

Shop Role

David’s favorite part of the hobby is seeing what is inside a rock, whether it belongs to him or someone else. He is currently rebuilding a slab saw at home to add to the rock room he built so that he and his wife can spend more time on their hobby.

He also helps with other maintenance around the shop and receives help from several members who volunteer their time and knowledge to keep things running.

Outside the Club

David’s other hobbies include woodworking, going to garage sales and flea markets, and repurposing his finds. He also enjoys camping and traveling while searching for rocks.

Shop Contact Note

If members would like to contact David about shop hours, use of the saw, or classes, they can send him an email.

The club depends on members who contribute their time, knowledge, and enthusiasm. Leadership positions help ensure meetings, educational programs, field trips, outreach activities, and the annual show continue to thrive.
